What is Project Bongo?

PROJECT BONGO is a non-profit making charitable trust based in the Shetland Islands that is dedicated to providing support and development for small scale projects in Ghana, West Africa for the following purposes:

1) To provide support and funding for small scale development and education projects in Ghana, West Africa.

2) To raise awareness of the development and educational needs of people in Ghana and West Africa in general.

3) To raise funds through donations and events to support people and projects identified by the Trust

4) To distribute funds to causes which the Trust considers worthwhile.

5) To organise events to sustain the Trust and promote cultural understanding between Shetland and Africa.

PROJECT BONGO raises funds through donations, fund-raising activities, and sales of goods made and donated. The Trust relies on these donations to further its aims and objectives. When projects are identified we endeavour to undertake the funding activities personally by visiting and distributing funds where possible or overseeing the spending through supporters in Ghana.

One of our general objectives is to provide support where funding issues may currently exist or assistance as such is lacking, for example help to disabled pupils in mainstream and special education. The educational aspect to PROJECT BONGO is very important and features in our project planning and is often a deciding factor in determining worthwhile projects for funding.

We are registered as a Scottish Charity (reg. Charity no. SC041581) and we were originally set up by Peter Davis who, with his late wife Linda, spent 2 years in the Bongo District in the Upper East Region of Ghana training teachers with Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) in conjunction with the Ghanian Education Service.

We try and spend ALL of our funds on Projects in Ghana. That means we don't spend it on any other purpose including administration. Sometimes Trustees will take funds personally to Africa and sometimes it is necessary to send funding via bank transfer or money transfer. In all cases relevant receipts are available.
